What is often seen by others as an annoying, yet minor problem for someone often goes far deeper. In fact, a survey of 2300 hearing-impaired adults aged 50 and older conducted by the NCOA (National Council on the Aging, May 1999, www.ncoa.org) found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety and paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities compared with those who wear hearing instruments.
