Behind-the-Ear hearing aids

One type of hearing aid is the kind that is placed behind the ear with a tube going into the ear. Behind-the-ear hearing aids come in three variants:

  • Standard behind-the-ear hearing aids

  • Fusion behind-the-ear hearing aids

  • Receiver-in-the-Ear hearing aids

Standard BTE

The main section of this hearing aid is hidden behind your ear and connected to a molded receiver that fits snugly in the outer ear.

Your hearing healthcare professional can help you determine whether you prefer a fully automatic aid that requires no manual adjustments – or a hearing aid that offers full control. These hearing aids offer a volume control and/or push button that allows selection from multiple programs for specific performance situations.

Suitable for: all types of hearing loss

Fusion BTE

The Fusion BTE is a unique Standard BTE hearing aid that can be adapted to changing amplification needs: Your hearing care professional can convert it to a Power hearing aid. It’s therefore a particularly good option if your hearing losses is on the border between moderate and severe because you won’t have to replace it if your hearing grows worse.

Suitable for: moderate to severe hearing losses

Receiver-in-the-Ear

Like the standard BTE the main section of this hearing aid is hidden behind your ear. Unlike a standard BTE – where the receiver is included in the hearing aid case – the receiver has been removed from the BTE housing and mounted externally in a tube fitted into the ear with a soft dome. You will therefore find that RIE hearing aids are usually smaller than standard BTE hearing aids.

Your hearing healthcare professional can help you determine if a RIE hearing aid would suit you and your hearing loss.

Suitable for: mild to moderately severe hearing loss
